Authors: Ncube, Cynthia S
Abstract: The research study sought to find the factors contributing to poor performance in English at ordinary level in rural schools in Umguza district. Qualitative research design was used. It enabled the researcher to look at various aspects of the study in their natural setting. Purposive sampling was used to select school heads, English teachers and ordinary level pupils who participated in the study. The researcher used interview and observation guides as well as document analysis to generate data. Data generated was analysed using thematic analysis approach. Some of the factors contributing to poor performance were, pupils’ negative attitude and shortage of teaching and learning resources. Some of the recommendations were that teachers should reward pupils who speak English as a way of motivation and that schools should engage in fundraising activities to mobilise teaching and learning resources.

Title: The teaching of Shakespeare to ESL Learners in Gweru District Secondary schools: Problems and Solutions.
Authors: Mureriwa, Catherine Shupikai
Abstract: The study sought to establish the problems and solutions in teaching Shakespeare to ESL learners in Gweru Urban schools. The problem is that both ESL learners and teachers encounter problems in tackling Shakespeare. The focus of this study therefore hinges on establishing appropriate strategies of teaching Shakespearean Literature. Respondents of the study were teachers and learners from the sampled schools. The sample size was comprised of 12 teachers and 40 learners. The descriptive survey design was used and it will be complemented by questionnaires and interviews. Data was presented through tables and graphs. The study established that the problems encountered in teaching Shakespearean Literature were mainly due to negative attitudes by learners. Problems also emanate from lack of innovative teaching methods. The study also revealed that the works are socially, linguistically and culturally alien to learners. The study therefore recommends that curriculum developers should allow the use of contemporary versions of Shakespearean works. It also recommends that teachers should motivate learners enough to appreciate Shakespearean Literature and they should make use of more learner-centred approaches. It further recommends that teachers should receive training in ICT and parents and schools should avail enough books and internet access to help in the learning process.

Title: The problems faced by form four pupils in writing a narrative composition in Bulilima District , Plumtree Matebeleland South Province
Authors: Phinda, Nqobile
Abstract: This study explored the problems faced by form four pupils in writing a narrative composition in three schools in Bulilima district in Plumtree in Matabeleland South Province. The thrust of his study was to explore the problems faced by form four pupils in writing a narrative composition and the possible solutions that can be employed in order to solve these problems. Questionnaires and interviews were used as research instruments and the questionnaires were administered to both teachers teaching form fours as well as the form four themselves in three different schools. Interviews were conducted to form four teaches only in three different schools. Different findings were made and these include among others that teachers lack knowledge of a narrative composition, the teaching method used by most teachers to teach a narrative composition is a lecture method which is not an effective method for such a concept probably thus why pupils are failing a narrative composition at form four, Literature review proved that the three phase approach is the best. Form four pupils are lacking practice in narrative composition writing yet practice makes perfect, both teachers and the pupils lack knowledge of the difference between a narrative and a descriptive composition and hence leading to poor performance in narrative composition writing and lastly that there are no libraries at school to boost vocabulary in narrative composition writing hence form four pupils lack appropriate language as they are not reading widely or extensively. A number of recommendations were made and these include among others that the head of schools should organize workshops where teachers of English language can interact and teach each other on how to write different types of composition especially and it should be a policy that dissertation be submitted to DSIs.During training as a teacher colleges to emphasize on the three phase approach in teaching a narrative composition in English Language The school Development Committee could embark on resource
mobilization for building a library and buying library books instead of purchasing a school bus.

Investigating the effects of streaming the grade 6 pupils according to their ability at Dumezweni Primary School in Khami District.

Title: Investigating the effects of streaming the grade 6 pupils according to their ability at Dumezweni Primary School in Khami District.
Authors: Moyo, Jane
Abstract: This document presents the findings on the perceptions of pupils and teachers of Dumezweni Primary school on the effects of the streaming of the grade 6pupils according to their ability at Dumezweni Primary School in Khami District.
The study used a combination of the qualitative and quantitative research approach. A descriptive and explanatory research design was used in this study because people sometimes fail to understand raw data. So the descriptive and the explanatory research design makes raw data understandable in this research. A sample of eighteen grade six pupils and seven grade six teachers was used. Judgemental sampling was used to select the pupils for this study; the researcher relied on her experience as a classroom practitioner to select the pupils who had a record of performing well, the mediocres and those who performed badly in class. As for the teachers, the researcher used convenience sampling whereby the researcher selected subjects who were easily accessible and willing to participate in the study.
Data is presented in the form of tables and bar graphs and different scores are interpreted using the Likert scale. The research findings were that the majority of teachers and pupils at Dumezweni Primary who were sampled for this study were in favour of the streaming of pupils according to their ability. They cited some very pertinent and valid reasons for that. The major reason they cited was that the streaming of pupils according to their ability was very beneficial to both the slow learners and the gifted learners. Those who were against streaming cited the fact that streaming dehumanises pupils, it causes stigmatisation and labelling of the slow learners.
vi
The study strongly recommends that streaming should be adopted in schools since it has got some notable benefits. The problem of the dehumanisation of the slow learner through labelling should be thoroughly dealt with by the teachers and the heads of schools since they are the ones who are responsible for setting the tone of the school. The pupils and the parents must also be enlightened on the benefits of streaming pupils according to their ability. If streaming is done properly the problem cited above will be a thing of the past.
