Title: Teachers attitudes on the use of ICT in the teaching and learning of mathematics in Gweru urban selected primary schools
Authors: Makono, Antony
Abstract: ICTs have become one of the essential pillars of modern society, therefore the attitude, mastery and understanding of ICT basic skills and concepts by teachers in learning and teaching is imperative. New broadband communication services and convergence of telecommunication with computers have created numerous possibilities to use a variety of new technology tools for teaching and learning system. The Zimbabwean government has put into place the ICT Strategic Plan and created the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology which requires everyone to be computer literate In an attempt to bring the potentials and benefits of the ICTs into schools and the promotion of computer literacy the Government donated computers and other ICT tools such as laptops, data projectors and interactive whiteboards in schools for the school children and their teachers despite these efforts Zimbabwe remains at the bottom ten of ICT Network Readiness. In Gweru Urban most primary schools have computer laboratories and are connected to internet the researcher noted that teachers are not embracing ICT in teaching and learning, continue to favour the traditional methods of teaching which make the lessons more teacher-centred rather than the effective ICT learner centred approach in spite of the availability of ICT tools in schools. It is against this background that the research looked at teachers’ attitude towards ICT use in teaching and learning mathematics in Gweru urban Primary schools in zone B.
Data was collected through the use of questionnaires and interviews. A sample of 50 participants were selected from five primary school. The sampled participants were selected from a population of 100 teachers and five head teachers were interviewed. Purposive sampling was used to select the participants. The study used a descriptive survey method as a research design employing mixed methods approach. Data were analysed using frequencies and percentages. Findings revealed that most teachers are scared of using ICT tools. The finding also revealed that the frequency in use of traditional tools and methods are higher than that one of ICT tools and methods. It was also revealed that training of teachers was the most given response as the solution to the challenges of using ICT in teaching and learning Mathematics . The government can electrify schools and provide generators so that electrical power should always be available to avoid technical problems during the use of ICT tools in teaching and learning.

Authors: Dudzai, Ruzvidzo
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the factors causing female students to drop out of school and the effects this could have in Zaka District. The researcher was motivated to carry out the study because uneducated women lead to underdevelopment of a country, poor healthy standards, as well as promoting antisocial behaviour. A sample of two schools, two school heads, eight teachers, ten students enrolled as well as five drop outs were used. The qualitative research design was used which enabled the researcher to get all the necessary information needed. Instruments used were document analysis and interview guide. Those instruments were used because they allow the researcher to get actual information required. Data were generated and presented in the form of themes and tables. Poverty, death and separation of parents are some of the major reasons why students drop out of school. Students should be involved in Guidance and counselling clubs and fund raising activities so that they are equipped with life survival skills. The Basic Education Assistance Module should increase the funds given to vulnerable students so that they get all the necessary resources for education to take place.

Title: An investigation into the use of information communication technology (ICT) in the teaching of Geography at ö"level in Mhondoro Ngezi District schools
Authors: Muwani, Adonia
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate into the use of Information Communication technology in the teaching of Geography at ‘O’ level in Mhondoro Ngezi District Secondary Schools. Descriptive survey design which utilized mixed approach method was used. Questionnaires were administered to thirteen teachers teaching Geography at selected schools. School heads of three schools were interviewed. Purposive sampling technique was used to select teachers for study. The findings revealed that teachers lack knowledge and skills in the use of ICT tools in Geography. They also have no access to ICT tools. In addition there is lack of ICT policy in schools and also no professional development for teachers pertaining the topic. Some schools are not electrified hence execution of ICT is hindered in Geography lessons. There is also scarcity of infrastructure such as computer laboratories and computers. The researcher used the following instruments: questionnaire, interviews and site visit. The questionnaires and interviews had similar questions here and there. The research instruments were pilot tested in three Hippo Valley Estates schools so as to ensure their validity and reliability during data collection. The researcher personally conducted the interviews and distributed the questionnaires in order to ensure hundred percent return of questionnaires. Teachers shared their experiences of the staff developments experiences they have received. Student achievement and its relationship to staff development was explored. Teachers discussed contributions staff development training do in improving quality education.
The research findings proved that staff development programmes can improve quality education.
